My Netcup experience isn't filling me with happy thoughts so far... I have signed up to a VPS with a UK host (who shall remain nameless so far as I have a pretty low opinion thus far) but I can see netcup's refund policy being used unfortunately.

I don't have any experience with NetCup.

I've just taken up an OVH UK server offer (£55 a month incl VAT)

CPU: Intel Xeon D-1541 - 8c/16t - 2.1GHz /2.7GHz
RAM: 32GB DDR4 ECC 2133 MHz
2 X 480GB SSD's
500Mbps bandwidth - Burst to 1Gbps

I'm pretty confident my issues are to do with the Hetzner Peering issues....and since Hetzner won't do jack about (won't even put me onto their transit partners), I may as well rule it out myself and put it in the UK......Should that not work then Google has to be the issue.

Hi Datamonkeh,

would you mind running GeekBench 4 on your RS2000 please?

And why aren't you happy with Netcup, anything in particular?
I have a RS1000 myself and it has been working fine up to now.

Did you look into CDN? In the back of my mind this is basically the solution I expect to work (nice price), I would just like not to have to throw £55 a month at the problem. I’ve got a ‘UK’ VPS that should be online today.

Just initial impressions, i'm coming from decent dedicated hardware with flash based storage back to VPS with SAS, its always going to feel slow, i've got to sort out proper testing later on, but it feels a little meh.

Yeah I looked into CDN and saw very little or no improvement when tested. Hetzner testing local speeds were fine (890Mbps down and 650Mbps up) but node performance was only good for about a week and after that I couldn't get more than 80Mbps into the UK...That poor performance for a Hetzner Auction server at £65 was mental.

Fortunately I have a group of people and we just contribute to the cost so its not a big hit per say but I understand where you're coming from.

Have you looked into Scaleway? I've had some success running instances with them and as long as you aren't doing library scans, there's reasonable performance. Peering isn't that bad into the UK either.

Well... Scaleway had issues last I knew (install documentation blacklisted them), but I have a UK VPS installing as I type this. It's not great in CPU terms, the non domestic peering appears to suck, one transcode is probably about as far as i'd go, but it's in the UK and peering to

Spec is:
2x vCore/4GB/120GB SSD/400Mbit (unlimited bandwidth).

   md5sum 512MB - 414 MB/s

   I/O Direct - 48.7 MB/s

RAM Speed (1024MB):

   Avg. read - 5632.0 MB/s

Benchmark finished in 173 seconds

Obviously it's not overly powerful and at anything non domestic its painfully slow, but hopefully being UK based should mean lower latency and better peering for me and my remote Plex users, I just don't expect more than 1, possibly 2 transcodes at a push. Just hope the peering to BT/TT is better - the simple speediest to Vodafone looked good, Vultr and Linode not so much so far.

Well... Scaleway had issues last I knew (install documentation blacklisted them), but I have a UK VPS installing as I type this. It's not great in CPU terms, the non domestic peering appears to suck, one transcode is probably about as far as i'd go, but it's in the UK and peering to

I just spun up Scaleway to see what he fuss was about.

I initially started with KimSufi (not bad) and then went to SoYouStart (also not bad)...went to Serv discount (poor UK peering) and then went to Hetzner (great for 2 weeks, crap after)....The general thought for me is anything using OVH appears to suck less haha.

OVH directly is pretty expensive but SoYouStart have a £45 per month UK server if thats's within your budget?

When my OVH order completes (they say 24hrs but their page now shows 72hrs) I'll post some stats up...Fingers crossed its half decent

I am shocked how much space you guys are using on Gsuites! :-O
Are you guys using that for personal use + some (real) friends only? How would you ever watch that much content?

Those OVH number look really good, my issue is I like hardware, and as most of my client's are local with only a handful of remote users, my needs fit the VPS feeder box set-up rather than running a dedicated AIO build. If I didn't run a local Plex server, or had a large number of remote users, I would be at OVH like a shot (most of the larger UK IPTV/Plex resellers used them), for simple feeder duty a cheap VPS is probably a better fit for me.

Ours (approx 15 users, 6 at any one time max seen) users are remote so don't have much choice.

I think the SoYouStart ones are probably better values for money tbh!

Re-ran again to check consistency

Suggestion:

It would be great if all these benchmark would have had a CPU benchmark like Geekbench so we would be able to compare the CPU performance of the different servers.

Geekbench for instance is pretty easy to run, download a tar, extract the tar, run the benchmark and let it do its magic.
Instructions

Step1. Put it somewhere
cd /home
sudo mkdir geekbench
cd geekbench

Step 2. Download Geekbench
sudo wget http://cdn.geekbench.com/Geekbench-4.2.2-Linux.tar.gz

Step 3. Unzip geekbench4
sudo tar xzvf Geekbench-4.2.2-Linux.tar.gz

Step 4. Change directory
cd Geekbench-4.2.2-Linux

Step 5. Make it executable
sudo chmod +x geekbench4

Step 6 : Run Geekbench
./geekbench4

@fr0sty how many users/streams can you run? is it plex only or also running radarr/sonarr etc on it?

my bench, Netcup RS1000 G8
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/11368033

this is just a basic setup with plex, radarr, sonarr & nzbget so see how things work out. i'm pretty positive i'll go for a hetzner soon because the nectup server is quite busy and can't stream proper...
