Many of us run remote servers for a variety of reasons, when you're choosing a host it's easy to compare CPU/RAM/HD/Network and cost on paper, all of those can be directly compared, except one, that one is arguably the most important - network. It's nice having a faster port speed (2.5Gbit on Online.net for example), but realistically if the peering or switch uplink is poor or congested, then it's near useless. Most hosts have a test file and you can't guarantee that it's in the same data centre, let alone representative of the speeds your server will hit. Thankfully PlexGuide has tools available in the menu that let you see how your connectivity is to a number of different providers/locations.

Host: ServDiscount (Myloc) located in Düsseldorf.
Spec: E3 1230v2 (4c/8t), 16GB ECC, 3x1TB 7.2k Ent. HDD, 1Gbit (300Mbit guaranteed, flat rate).
Cost: €30.99

First lets do a speed test, this locates the nearest (lowest ping) speedtest.net server and runs a download and upload test, it's not massively useful, but it'll give you a rough idea of what your server is capable of and if you are getting what you are paying for.

From the main PlexGuide menu choose option 5) Server and Net Benchmarks, then 4) Simple Speed Test

Simple Speedtest Results:
Download: 825.24 Mbit/s
Upload: 412.85 Mbit/s

Next up let's look at how my server connects to other data centres.

From the main PlexGuide menu choose option 5) Server and Net Benchmarks, 2) System Info & Benchmark - Advanced.

## IO Test
CPU Speed:
bzip2 512MB - 52.0 MB/s
sha256 512MB - 91.0 MB/s
md5sum 512MB - 397 MB/s

Disk Speed (512MB):
I/O Speed - 1.3 GB/s
I/O Direct - 14.4 MB/s

RAM Speed (1024MB):
Avg. write - 2423.5 MB/s
Avg. read - 4812.8 MB/s

So, Hetzner peering is a little slower than I would like (private 10Gbit link from Hetzner to Myloc - it tested higher later on) and if you live in New Caledonia or Argentina, then this probably isn't the host for you, USA end point's are variable, but in general the EU is reasonable and I can easily saturate my home connection (UK 80Mbit).

So come on, let's see how other hosts perform, post your results.

*Disclaimer* Results will vary based on location, time of day, switch/network load and routing/peering, and in some cases the type of connection you pay for. For example OVH with premium bandwidth/10Gbit/SSD when tuned can pull some amazing numbers, but the RRP is over 5-7x what you'll pay for an average entry level Hetzner/Myloc/OVH based box.

*edited to add IO* - Yes they look oddly high/low.

A friend ran a triathalon last year, he bumped into a near 20ft python on a chain link fence in the middle of the city, I thought he was joking till he sent me a link to the news story. Then someone chained a pair of chrome jingling scrotal sack style balls to the bottom of his Hilux.... Australia is exotic :D

Got to love that your speed to Hetzner with a Hetzner box isn’t your fastest result, makes me feel better that the 10Gbit private pipe from Myloc to Hetzner isn’t that great for me. Also those US speeds don’t look so great, could just be time of day though, I’d be interested to see how online.net and OVH compare.

I have friends that can watch 40mbps content on the Hetzner box from West Coast, I can barely watch 5mbps different providers different results. I am happy to run the PMS and Plexdrive at home in a vm. Using Hetzner as a download mainly.

10Gbit and SSD make a noticeable difference on some of the closer EU's, no denying the value in that for them, still Hetzner's connection to Hetzner isn't the fastest, which is kind of odd. CPU/IO is nice vfm though, just 160GB would feel a little tight.

Where's the physical location of your server? Those are some pretty decent specs. :)

Easy enough to sync the data elsewhere every x hours, the OVH numbers are lower, but more consistent. Given the Hetzner price for the 20GB plan is under 3 euro, its stupidly cheap for 20TB of upload.

@boltn Those EU numbers unfortunately confirm why Oneprovider are on my NFC list, the US pings suggest it’s probably East Coast judging by the LA speed.

Could you explain what you mean by sync? Are you saying I could move the torrent and contents to one of my other servers to then be seeded there? Sorry if I sound stupid, I am... at least where this is concerned. ;)

I'm the opposite, I also have a server in France but the peering was not good at all so I had to get something a bit closer.

I'm not going to even dare to post my $5 droplet benchmark haha, but it does get the job done for personal use.
