Guides Plex Anime Agent Installation

Assists Greatly with Development Costs

Junior Member
Hello all time for my first real contribution to PG.

After searching the forums and seeing a few folks struggling with anime in plex I looked through my old bookmarks from when I set up my media server prior to using PG and now I have successfully added the HAMA Agent to plex after installing via PG. If you have no idea what I'm talking about feel free to check out HTTP AniDB Metadata Agent (HAMA) on GitHub but long story short it adds a custom scanner and agent to Plex that does a much much better job of handling anime titles and matches than the Plex Agents do.

Figured I would share the steps needed to do so with the rest of you. You need to ssh to your machine and you will need sudo access, both of which you should already have if you used PG. Commands are as follow:

sudo docker exec -it plex /bin/bash

apt update
apt install git wget -y

cd Library
cd 'Application Support'
cd 'Plex Media Server'
cd Plug-ins
git clone https://github.com/ZeroQI/Hama.bundle.git
chown -R plex:plex Hama.bundle
chmod 775 -R Hama.bundle

cd ..

mkdir -p Scanners/Series
cd Scanners/Series
wget -O 'Absolute Series Scanner.py' https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ZeroQI/Absolute-Series-Scanner/master/Scanners/Series/Absolute%20Series%20Scanner.py
cd ../..
chown -R plex:plex Scanners
chmod 775 -R Scanners

cd 'Plug-in Support/Data'
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/AniDB
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/Plex
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/OMDB
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TMDB
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/blank
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/_cache/fanart/original
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/episodes
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/fanart/original
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/fanart/vignette
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/graphical
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/posters
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/seasons
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/seasonswide
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/TVDB/text
mkdir -p com.plexapp.agents.hama/DataItems/FanartTV
chown -R plex:plex com.plexapp.agents.hama
chmod 775 -R com.plexapp.agents.hama

apt remove git wget -y
apt autoremove
Press Ctrl + D to exit the Docker Bash Shell

Lets restart Plex

sudo docker restart plex
TADA now you are all set Plex has been updated with Hama.

Check settings agents to ensure it was picked up properly then create your anime library, pictures below for refernce.

Hama has a TON of settings however make sure you know exactly what you are doing before tweaking anything or you will bork things... horrible things... things that will make your loved ones never look at you the same way again...

Hopefully, this should clear up how to get anime working better in plex using Hama for the couple posts I found people struggling in.
